How to choose
- Locking style: Screw locks are simple and reliable. Twist and triple locks close on their own, which helps when gloves or fatigue make it easy to forget.
- Shape: D shapes put the load on the strong spine. Oval shapes keep pulleys and rings centered.
- Ratings: For loads that include a person, use gear rated for life safety. One NRS carabiner here is marked NFPA G-rated in its name; check each product for its rating.
- Material: Steel resists wear and abrasion. Aluminum is lighter to carry.

What does G-rated mean?
Under NFPA rope rescue standards, G (general use) rated hardware is built for loads that may include more than one person, while T (technical use) is rated for lighter loads.
Can I use a non-locking carabiner for rescue?
Non-locking carabiners are handy for gear and tool clipping. For anything that carries a person, use a locking carabiner rated for the job.
