Job-Fitted Boots Since 1892

Made in Wisconsin since 1892: USA-made American Heritage moc toes and Wellingtons, plus Deuce, GenFlex2 and Crosstrex duty boots.

For police, EMS & fire crews

Duty Boots That Go On Fast

Thorogood's public safety boots are built for shifts that start without warning. The GenFlex2 Trooper and the Deuce zip up the side, and their BBP waterproof barrier keeps out water and blood-borne pathogens on EMS calls. The Thoro-Flex quick-release station boot pulls on in seconds with a composite safety toe, and the Uniform Classics poromeric oxford holds a high-gloss shine for Class A dress without polishing.

Thorogood Width Guide & Footbed Sizes

Thorogood boots come in US sizes. Widths are marked two ways depending on the style: D or M is regular, EE or W is wide, and EEE or XW is extra wide. Measure seated, and if you fall between sizes, Thorogood says to go with the bigger size.

Fit tips from Thorogood

  • A half size adds about 3/16" of length and 1/8" of width.
  • Going from D to 2E widens the toe box about 1/4" in a size 10.5, but the steel toe cap stays the same width. If a safety toe pinches, try a wider width before a longer size.
  • Leave about half an inch between your longest toe and the toe cap. Many workers go up a half size in a steel toe boot.
  • Widths vary by style. The width menu on each listing shows exactly what we carry.

Thorogood Boots FAQ

  • Are Thorogood boots made in the USA?

Many are. Thorogood is made by Weinbrenner Shoe Co., an employee-owned company founded in 1892 in Milwaukee and now based in Merrill, Wisconsin. Its American Heritage, 1957 Series, Logger, American Legacy, Hammerhead and Western Work boots are labeled "Made in USA with USA and globally sourced components," with final construction in Thorogood's union factories in Wisconsin.

The uniform and duty lines (Deuce, GenFlex2, Crosstrex, Uniform Classics and Thoro-Flex) are imported, and Buffalo Ridge is made in Vietnam. Our comparison chart shows the origin of each series.

  • What is the difference between Thorogood 804 and 814 boots?

The style number tells you the toe. 804 is a men's safety toe boot and 814 is the same style with a soft toe; on women's boots, 504 is safety toe and 514 is soft toe. For example, the American Heritage 6" moc toe comes as 804-4200 with a steel toe or 814-4200 without one.

Uniform and duty styles start with 834 or 831, and socks and footbeds with 888 and 889.

  • Are Thorogood boots steel toe or composite toe?

Both, depending on the series. American Heritage, 1957 Series and Logger safety toe boots use a steel toe. Jobsite, Crosstrex, Deuce and Thoro-Flex use a non-metal composite toe, and American Legacy, Hammerhead, Western Work and Buffalo Ridge use Thorogood's Nano composite toe, which Thorogood says gives certified protection in a lighter, less bulky profile.

Non-metallic styles won't set off security screening devices, which matters on high-security jobs.

  • Are Thorogood boots NFPA certified for firefighting?

No. Thorogood's work, uniform, duty and station boots are not NFPA structural firefighting boots and should not be worn for interior fire attack. Since 2019, Thorogood's certified fire boots have been sold through LION as LION Fire Boots by Thorogood.

We still carry a few older LION by Thorogood fire boot listings; check each listing for its certification, or shop our full selection of certified firefighter boots.

  • Which Thorogood boots are best for police, EMS and fire station wear?

For patrol and EMS, look at the side-zip duty boots: the Deuce, the GenFlex2 Trooper and the Crosstrex all have a BBP waterproof barrier that keeps out water and blood-borne pathogens. For the station, the Thoro-Flex quick-release pull-on has a composite safety toe and goes on in seconds. For Class A dress, the Uniform Classics poromeric oxford holds a high-gloss shine without polishing.

  • How do Thorogood boots fit?

Thorogood boots use standard US sizes. Widths are marked D or M for regular, EE or W for wide and EEE or XW for extra wide, depending on the style. Thorogood says to measure seated and go with the bigger size if you fall between sizes, and notes that many workers go up a half size in a steel toe boot.

A 2E toe box is about 1/4" wider than a D in a size 10.5, but the steel toe cap stays the same width, so try a wider width before a longer size.

  • What is the Thorogood warranty?

Thorogood warrants its footwear against defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase, under normal use. Normal sole wear, misuse and neglect are not covered, and Thorogood repairs or replaces defective footwear at its discretion. The warranty applies only to boots bought from an authorized seller, with the original receipt.

The Public Safety Store is an authorized Thorogood dealer, so the full warranty applies to everything you buy here. Reach out to our team and we will handle the claim for you.
