The Storm Family: Waterproof Headlamps

The Storm puts out 450 lumens on three AAA batteries and the Storm+ puts out 750 lumens on a USB-C rechargeable battery. Both are IP67 rated for immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, have a digital lockout so they stay off in a pack, and have colored night-vision modes.

  • Who makes Black Diamond?

    Black Diamond grew out of Chouinard Equipment, started by Yvon Chouinard in 1965. In 1989 a group of its employees took over the company, renamed it Black Diamond and moved it to Salt Lake City. It makes climbing hardware, headlamps, lanterns and other mountain gear.

  • Which Black Diamond headlamp is waterproof?

    The Storm and Storm+ are IP67 rated and the Spot and Cosmo are IPX8 rated, so all four handle immersion for up to 30 minutes. The Stella-R, Wiz Kid, Moji+ and Orbiter 650 are IPX4, which means water resistant but not submersible.

  • Are Black Diamond headlamps rechargeable?

    The Storm+, Stella-R and Wiz Kid have built-in rechargeable batteries; the Storm+ and Stella-R charge by USB-C. The Storm, Spot and Cosmo ship with three AAA batteries and also take an optional BD 1500 mAh rechargeable battery, sold separately. The Moji+ runs on a rechargeable battery or three AAA batteries.

  • Can I use Black Diamond lights on a fire scene?

    No. Black Diamond lights are outdoor and water rescue lights. They are not rated for fire or high heat and are not NFPA firefighting PPE. They suit search teams, boat crews, rope work and long nights at a staging area.

  • Which Black Diamond carabiner should I use for rope rescue?

    For life-safety connections use a locking carabiner. The Pearlock is a Type H (HMS) screwgate rated 23 kN, made for a Munter hitch or belay device. The Hotforge Screwgate is a compact 24 kN locker. The Oval Keylock and MiniWire do not lock and are best for racking pulleys, prusiks and gear.
