SMC Rope Rescue Hardware

Pulleys, carabiners, descenders and rigging plates for rope, swiftwater and fire rescue teams, made in the USA since 1967.

For swiftwater and rope rescue teams

A Pulley Built for Moving Water

The SMC 2 inch Swiftwater Pulley has anodized side plates drilled with a row of holes that help cut the hydroplaning a typical pulley can have in current. The side plates are tensioned for one-handed placement anywhere on the rope, the base minds prusiks up to 8 mm, and a sealed ball bearing keeps a Z-drag hauling smoothly. It weighs 6 oz and is rated 34 kN.

SMC FAQ

  • Who makes SMC rescue hardware?

SMC was founded in 1967 as Seattle Manufacturing Corporation by Jim Clark. SMC is now part of Harken, and SMC says all of its products are made in the USA at its Ferndale, Washington facility. It is an ISO 9001 certified manufacturer.

  • Which SMC pulleys are NFPA rated?

The 3 inch NFPA Single PMP is rated NFPA G (General Use), the Micro PMP meets NFPA L (Light Use), and the 2 inch Swiftwater Pulley is listed to NFPA 2500, 2022 edition. SMC does not list an NFPA rating for the CRx2 or the Apex Swivel Pulley.

  • Which pulley should a swiftwater team carry?

Many water teams carry the CRx2, which weighs 1.9 oz and fits a PFD pocket for 3:1 Z-drags. The 2 inch Swiftwater Pulley is bigger at 34 kN and has drilled side plates that help cut hydroplaning in current.

  • What is the difference between the Force Oval and Force D carabiners?

The Force Oval is symmetrical, so it loads predictably and racks pulleys well; it is rated 22 kN closed. The Force D carries the load toward the spine and is rated 31 kN closed. Each comes in a non-locking and a Screw-Lok version.

  • Can SMC hardware be used for fire or high-heat work?

No. SMC pulleys, carabiners and descenders are technical rope rescue and water rescue hardware. They are not rated for fire or high-heat use and are not structural firefighting PPE.

  • What rope does SMC hardware take?

The Micro PMP, 2 inch Swiftwater, 3 inch PMP and Apex pulleys take rope up to 0.5 inch (13 mm). The Mountaineering 8 works on single or double ropes from 8 mm to 12.5 mm.

  • Where can I buy SMC?

You can buy SMC at The Public Safety Store, For the Brave Behind the Badge, a firefighter-owned store and an authorized SMC dealer. We carry SMC pulleys, Force carabiners, the Mountaineering 8 and the Origin 8 rigging plate. Every order is backed by our price match guarantee and easy 30-day returns.
