Majestic FORTEX Particulate Hood

FORTEX is Majestic's structural hood for the new standard. A Nomex Nano Flex particulate barrier is laminated between two Nomex/viscose knit faces, so the hood is one breathable, flexible layer, and it is UL certified to NFPA 1970-2025. The Direct-Grip face opening grips your SCBA facepiece, and the Doff Assist Tab makes the hood easy to pull off. It comes in one universal size, 20 inches long, in eight designs.

Majestic Fire Apparel FAQ

  • Is the Majestic FORTEX hood NFPA 1970 certified?

Yes. Majestic lists FORTEX as UL certified to NFPA 1970-2025 for structural firefighting. Its particulate barrier is a Nomex Nano Flex membrane, laminated between two Nomex/viscose knit faces into a single breathable layer.

  • What is a proximity hood, and can I wear one on a structure fire?

A proximity hood is certified for proximity firefighting, meaning work close to high radiant heat such as aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF). Under NFPA 1970-2025, proximity hoods are not required to have a particulate barrier, but every structural hood is. That means a proximity hood is not a structural particulate hood. Majestic says its PRO-X proximity hoods can also be worn for exterior and non-structural operations where interior structural entry is not required.

For interior structural firefighting, choose a particulate hood certified to NFPA 1970, such as FORTEX.

  • Why are Majestic Nomex and Fire Ink hoods on closeout?

These hoods were certified to NFPA 1971-2018, and structural hoods can no longer be manufactured to that edition. We're selling the remaining stock, and once a design sells out it won't be restocked.

Several favorite Fire Ink designs, including Shamrock, Red Line Flag and Pink Ribbon, now come on the NFPA 1970 FORTEX.

  • Are Nomex hoods still NFPA compliant?

A Nomex hood certified to NFPA 1971-2018 stays certified to that edition and can still be sold and worn. It does not meet NFPA 1970-2025, which requires a particulate-blocking barrier in every new structural hood. That is why new knit-only structural hoods can no longer be made.

Whether you may wear one on a structure fire is your department's decision.

  • What is a particulate hood?

A particulate hood is a firefighter hood with a built-in barrier layer. The barrier filters out fine smoke particles while still letting moisture vapor escape. Under NFPA 1970-2025, a structural hood must block at least 90% of particles between 0.1 and 1.0 microns, and the barrier must cover nearly the whole hood, seams included.
