FORTEX: The Majestic Hood Built for the New Standard
The hood standard has changed. Under NFPA 1970-2025, which replaced NFPA 1971-2018, every new structural firefighting hood must include a particulate-blocking barrier. A traditional knit Nomex hood stops heat and flame, but fine soot particles can pass through the knit to the skin of your neck, jaw and ears. FORTEX is Majestic Fire Apparel's answer, a structural hood UL certified to NFPA 1970-2025.
FORTEX is built from a single-layer trilaminate. A Nomex® Nano Flex particulate-blocking membrane sits between a Nomex®/viscose knit outer face and a Nomex®/viscose knit inner face. Because the barrier is laminated into one layer, the hood stays breathable and flexible. You get the particulate protection without the bulk of a stack of loose layers.

An elastic tab at the top of the face opening gives you an easy-to-grab point for positioning the hood and pulling it off.
DIRECT-GRIP FACE OPENING
Most hoods cover the face-opening elastic with fabric. FORTEX leaves it exposed, so the elastic grips your SCBA facepiece directly for a firm, secure fit.

Is the Majestic FORTEX hood NFPA 1970 certified?
Yes. Majestic lists FORTEX as UL certified to NFPA 1970-2025 for structural firefighting. NFPA 1970-2025 is the current edition. It replaced NFPA 1971-2018 and requires a particulate-blocking barrier in every new structural hood.
How is FORTEX different from a regular Nomex hood?
A regular Nomex or Nomex blend hood is knit fabric only. It protects against heat and flame but has no barrier against fine soot particles. FORTEX adds a Nomex Nano Flex particulate-blocking membrane, laminated between two Nomex/viscose knit faces into a single layer. That barrier is what NFPA 1970-2025 now requires for structural hoods.
What size is the FORTEX hood?
FORTEX comes in universal sizing with a 20-inch length, so there is no size to pick. Just choose your design.
Are all eight FORTEX designs the same hood?
Yes. Majestic sells all eight in its FORTEX particulate hood line, certified to NFPA 1970. Black and Tan are solid colors. The other six are black FORTEX hoods with a Majestic Fire Ink design: Shamrock, Red Line Flag, Pink Ribbon, Pink Ribbon Flag, Freedom Flag and 911 Flag.
Can I still use my old Nomex hood?
A hood certified to NFPA 1971-2018 stays certified to that edition, and it can still be sold and worn. Hoods can no longer be manufactured to the old edition, though, and your department's PPE policy decides what you may wear on a structure fire. Our NFPA 1970 hood guide explains the details.
How do I clean the FORTEX hood, and does it contain PFAS?
Follow the care label on the hood and your department's PPE cleaning program, and inspect the hood after every wash. Majestic publishes PFAS and Prop 65 compliance statements for its NFPA 1970 structural hoods. As an authorized Majestic dealer we can send you a copy, along with the warranty details.
