Hi-Vis Certified for Public Safety Work
ANSI/ISEA 107 sorts hi-vis garments by type, and Type P is the one written for public safety responders, while Type R covers roadway workers. Portwest certifies many of its vests and jackets to both. The US387 public safety vest has a 5-point breakaway system that releases at the side seams, shoulder seams and center front if it gets snagged, plus mic tabs and a cell phone pocket. For cold, wet calls, the UH440 rain jacket and PW369 parka are Type R and Type P Class 3.
US387 Public Safety VestType R & P Class 2, 5-point breakaway
C470 Band and Brace VestType R & P Class 2, certified after 50 washes
UH440 Rain Traffic JacketType R & P Class 3, waterproof
PW369 Winter ParkaType R & P Class 3, insulatedNot every Class 3 item is Type P. The Kobuk US382 and Aurora US373 sleeved vests and the S191 long sleeve tee are certified Type R Class 3 only, and Iona, Day-Vis and US390 styles are not ANSI certified. If your agency specifies Type P, check the listing. Compare Portwest gear.

Who makes Portwest workwear?
Portwest is a family-owned workwear, safetywear and PPE company. Charles Hughes started it in 1904 in Westport, Ireland, and the Hughes family still owns and runs it. Portwest owns factories in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Ethiopia and has a sales office in the USA.
-
Is Portwest hi-vis ANSI certified?
Most of it is. Portwest certifies its hi-vis vests, shirts, jackets and rainwear to ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 2, Class 3 or Class E, and many styles stay certified after 50 washes. The Iona and Day-Vis lines and the US390 economy vest are enhanced-visibility items, not ANSI certified, so don't use them where an ANSI garment is required.
-
Which Portwest safety vest is best for police, fire and EMS?
For traffic scenes, choose a vest certified to ANSI/ISEA 107 Type P, the public safety type. The US387 public safety vest is Type R and Type P Class 2 with a 5-point breakaway system, mic tabs and a cell phone pocket. The C470 band and brace vest is also Type R and Type P Class 2. The Kobuk US382 and Aurora US373 sleeved vests are Type R Class 3 only.
-
Is Portwest FR clothing NFPA certified?
Portwest's Bizflame 88/12, Bizflame Denim Flex and Bizweld garments are rated to NFPA 2112 for flash fire and NFPA 70E for arc flash, and each lists its arc rating (ATPV). This is industrial FR workwear, not NFPA 1971 structural turnout gear or NFPA 1977 wildland gear. The Bizflame Knit FR01 and FR02 tops list an ATPV of 12 cal/cm² but no NFPA 2112 rating.
-
What cut levels do Portwest gloves have?
Portwest rates its cut gloves to ANSI/ISEA 105, from A1 grip gloves up to the A6 A665 and the A9 CT69. The A780 Arc Grip pairs ANSI Cut A4 with arc flash Level 2 protection (ATPV 9.5 cal/cm²), and the A721 adds ANSI/ISEA 138 Level 2 impact protection. Most of our Portwest glove names include the cut level.
-
