Ratchet the Hydrant Open

A standard hydrant wrench has to come off the nut and be reset on every swing. The EZ-Spanner ratchets, so you keep turning from a safe stance, and the extension handle adds leverage on a stuck hydrant. The same tool carries hooks for couplings and fittings, so one wrench does the hydrant and the hose.

EZ-Spanner FAQ

  • Who makes EZ-Spanner?

EZ-Spanner was designed by Dennis Garrison, a veteran Los Angeles Fire Department engineer who saw a safety need at the hydrant. South Park Corporation, a maker of fire apparatus fittings, acquired EZ-Spanner in 2020 and continues the line.

  • Why use a ratcheting hydrant wrench?

A ratcheting wrench keeps turning the operating nut without being lifted off and reset, so you can open the hydrant from a steadier, safer position. The extension handle adds leverage, which helps on obstructed or hard-to-open hydrants.

  • What is the difference between the EZ-Spanner and the Billy Goat?

The Billy Goat is a smaller, lighter version of the EZ-Spanner ratcheting wrench. It has two interchangeable ratcheting sockets (1.75 in. and 1.5 in.) and three custom hooks, but no extendable handle. Add the slide-on breaker bar when you need more leverage.

  • Will an EZ-Spanner fit our hydrants?

The sockets are sized to fit the common hydrant manufacturers, and EZ-Spanner can customize socket sizes to a district's needs. Check your operating nut and cap sizes against the listing before ordering, or ask us and we'll help you match them.

  • What does the Mini-Goat do?

The Mini-Goat is a slim pocket tool with EZ-Spanner's custom hook design for tightening couplings and fittings. It also has two gas shut-offs and a multi-step nut wrench, and it fits in a pocket or small compartment at the pump panel.

  • How does the HB-100 hose bag attach?

The HB-100 attaches straight to your supply hose with three Velcro straps and expands as the hose fills. It holds EZ-Spanner tools and most common hydrant tools, with a Velcro and button closure that opens with one pull.

  • Where can I buy EZ-Spanner?
