Leather helmet comparison
Phenix TL2 vs. Cairns N5A & N6A
Same leather tradition. Nearly a pound less on your neck, a balance point built to sit low, and a lower price. Here's how the TL2 stacks up against the Cairns New Yorker and Houston, using the makers' own published numbers.

Why firefighters switch
Three reasons the TL2 wins
Lighter
Phenix puts the TL2 at about 55 oz. Cairns lists the N5A New Yorker at 2.0 kg, about 70.5 oz. That's roughly 15 oz (22%) less riding on your head and neck every hour you wear it.
Center of gravity
Phenix built the TL2 to sit lower on the head with a low, centered balance point. Less weight held high and forward means less leverage on your neck when you look down, crawl, or work under an SCBA, so there's less neck fatigue by the end of a long shift.
Lower cost
The OSHA TL2 is … here. An N5A, which Cairns lists as OSHA compliant only, typically sells for $1,225 to $1,280 at major online retailers. For about the price of an N5A, you get the NFPA-certified TL2 with factory ESS goggles (…).

Know before you buy
Where the Cairns falls short
Cairns N5A New Yorker
- The heaviest of the three on paper. At 2.0 kg (about 70.5 oz), it carries roughly 15 oz more than a TL2, all day.
- OSHA compliant only. Cairns does not list the N5A as NFPA 1971 compliant. If your SOP requires an NFPA-certified helmet, and most do, the N5A isn't an option.
- It costs more. It typically sells above the price of an NFPA-certified TL2 with goggles.
Cairns N6A Houston
- No published weight. Cairns doesn't list a weight for the N6A, so you can't compare it on paper. The TL2's weight is published: about 55 oz.
- No low-balance design claim. Phenix designed the TL2 around a low, centered balance point; Cairns publishes no comparable claim.
- Built to order with no published price, so it's hard to compare until you're deep in a quote.
Cairns helmets have a long history, and a lot of us grew up wearing one. But if you want a leather lid that's lighter, better balanced and priced lower, the TL2 is the stronger helmet for working firefighters.

NFPA or OSHA?
What you actually need
NFPA version
To meet NFPA 1971, the TL2 must ship from the factory with new ESS FirePro goggles (long strap), Nomex earlaps (sewn-in or detachable) and lime/yellow or red/orange tetrahedrons. Your existing goggles don't count: the whole assembly is certified and stickered together.
OSHA version
The same helmet shell with no goggles required, stickered OSHA. The price difference is the goggles and NFPA certification, not the helmet. Most departments require NFPA, so check your SOP before you order.
Questions
TL2 vs. Cairns FAQ
Is the Phenix TL2 lighter than a Cairns N5A?
Yes. Phenix puts the TL2 at about 55 oz. Cairns lists the N5A New Yorker at 2.0 kg (about 70.5 oz). That makes the TL2 roughly 15 oz, or about 22%, lighter.
Is the Cairns N5A NFPA compliant?
No. Cairns lists the N5A New Yorker as OSHA compliant; its NFPA 1971 leather helmet is the N6A Houston. The Phenix TL2 comes in both an NFPA 1971 configuration (with factory ESS goggles) and an OSHA configuration.
Why does center of gravity matter in a fire helmet?
The higher and farther forward a helmet's weight sits, the more it pulls on your neck every time you tilt your head. Phenix designed the TL2 to sit lower on the head with a low, centered balance point to reduce neck fatigue.
Is the TL2 cheaper than a Cairns?
Yes. Compare our TL2 prices on this page, shown live from our store, with the $1,225 to $1,280 an OSHA-only Cairns N5A typically sells for online. Options such as a name stamp or Miller upgrade change the TL2 total.
Can I keep my old goggles and still be NFPA compliant?
No. For NFPA 1971, the TL2 has to ship from the factory with new ESS FirePro goggles, earlaps and NFPA tetrahedrons, certified and stickered as one assembly.
Does the TL2 work with my SCBA?
Yes. Phenix's traditional leather helmets interface with any SCBA mask, with either the ratchet or the nape strap suspension.
