Hand Tools
Firefighter Hand Tools
This category gathers the small tools firefighters and rescuers keep close: pocket rescue tools, tongue-and-groove pliers, cutting pliers, a 4-in-1 utility screwdriver and spring-loaded window punches. These are the tools that handle quick jobs at a scene, such as shutting off a utility valve, cutting wire, loosening a fitting or breaking a vehicle side window for access.
How to choose
- Size: Pick tools that fit your turnout pockets or radio strap without getting in the way. Compact designs are easier to carry every shift.
- Grip: Look for handles you can work with gloves on. Large grips and textured surfaces help in wet conditions.
- Window punch: Spring-loaded punches break tempered side windows with light pressure. They are not intended for laminated windshields.
- Insulation: Plastic-dipped handles add comfort but are not electrical protection unless the tool is rated for that use.

Hand Tool FAQ
What tools should a firefighter carry in their pockets?
Common picks are a rescue tool or pliers, a door wedge, a window punch, a flashlight and a small spanner. Your department may set its own list.
Will a window punch work on a windshield?
No. Spring-loaded punches are for tempered glass, typically side and rear windows. Windshields are laminated and need a different tool.
