The Model 700C and Its Family

The Model 700C is the classic Peerless chain link handcuff, now with an improved internal lock for more tamper resistance and smoother ratcheting. It is certified to NIJ Standard 0307.01, weighs 10 ounces, has push pin double lock and ships with two keys. The same cuff is the base of Peerless waist chains and the 700CTC-32 dual restraint, and the 702C oversize follows the same design with a 20% larger inside perimeter.

Peerless lists NIJ 0307.01 certification for the 700C, 750C, 801C and 850C. Its oversize cuffs and leg irons are described as made to meet or exceed NIJ standards, not certified. Not sure which you need? Compare Peerless restraints.

Peerless Handcuff Company FAQ

  • Who makes Peerless handcuffs?

Peerless Handcuff Company, established in 1914 in Springfield, Massachusetts. James Milton Gill founded it after buying the patent for a new handcuff design by inventor George Carney. It is still a family business, now in its fourth generation, based in West Springfield, Massachusetts, and the restraints we carry are listed by Peerless as made in USA.

  • Are Peerless handcuffs NIJ certified?

Some are. Peerless lists the 700C and 750C chain link cuffs and the 801C and 850C hinged cuffs as certified to NIJ Standard 0307.01. The 702C and 752C oversize cuffs and the leg irons are described as made to meet or exceed NIJ standards for workmanship, strength, tamper resistance and corrosion resistance, which is not the same as certification.

  • Should I carry chain link or hinged handcuffs?

Chain link cuffs like the 700C are lighter and quicker to apply. Peerless says its hinged cuffs give additional restraint by restricting hand and arm movement more. The 801C has a 6.4 to 9.1 inch inside perimeter, and the color 850C folds flat and is 10% larger inside than the 700C.

  • What Peerless handcuffs fit larger people?

The 702C oversize cuff has a 20% larger inside perimeter than the 700C (7.75 to 10 inches). For broad upper bodies, the 700C-6X and 702C-6X add links for 5 1/2 inches between cuffs, so you don't need to link two pairs. The 705C oversize leg iron has a 3.2 inch opening.

  • Why buy color handcuffs?

Peerless color finishes help agencies identify and track their property, and some use color to flag a classification such as threat level, medical condition or jurisdiction. The finish is Electrolytic Polyurethane Plating (EPP), which coats inside and out without affecting the lock, and Peerless says it exceeds the NIJ 12-hour salt spray test.

  • How do I clean and maintain Peerless handcuffs?

Keep the ratchet and keyhole free of dirt and lint, and dry the lock fully after any moisture, using a hair dryer if needed but staying under 300 degrees F. Then lubricate standard and color cuffs with a quality light oil and wipe off the excess. Never boil handcuffs, and don't stamp or etch them, which Peerless says can cause malfunction and void the warranty.

  • What is the Peerless handcuff warranty?

Peerless restraints have a lifetime warranty for manufacturer defects on restraints made after January 1, 1996; Peerless will repair or replace a defective restraint. It does not cover abuse or ordinary wear and tear. The Public Safety Store is an authorized Peerless dealer, so contact us with your order number and we'll help with the claim.
