Gear Built by a Training Company
ASP was founded in 1976 by Dr. Kevin Parsons, a police academy instructor in firearms and defensive tactics. The company designs its batons, handcuffs, lights and OC to be used together, and it runs ASP Instructor Certification classes tuition-free for qualified law enforcement, covering the baton, restraints, flashlights and OC. Certification is competency based, so attending a class does not guarantee you pass.

ASP FAQ
-
What is the difference between ASP Friction and Talon batons?
A Friction baton locks open on a precision taper and closes by striking the tip sharply straight down on a hard surface like concrete. A Talon baton closes when you press the button or end cap and push the tip into your hand or an ASP scabbard. Never close a Talon by striking it: ASP says that can damage the internal parts and void the warranty.
Attachments are marked by series: F Series fits Friction batons and T Series fits Talon batons. Neither fits the concealable Agent or Protector.
-
Is an Airweight ASP baton as effective as steel?
ASP says Airweight shafts cut weight by 45% and keep 98% of the striking potential of steel. Black Chrome is ASP's most durable black finish, and Electroless is the most corrosion resistant, which suits humid climates.
Friction and Talon batons come in Airweight, Black Chrome or Electroless. The concealable Agent comes in Airweight or Steel.
-
Is it legal to carry an expandable baton or pepper spray?
It depends on where you live and what you do. ASP notes that if you are not law enforcement, licensed security or in a similar role, owning or carrying an expandable baton may be regulated or banned in some places. Pepper spray rules vary by state and city, including age limits, canister size and strength, and shipping limits.
Check with your local police department and your agency policy before you buy or carry. The buyer is responsible for following the law. These are defensive tools, not flame resistant or NFPA-rated PPE.
-
What is the difference between 1 pawl and 2 pawl ASP Plus Cuffs?
ASP color-codes Plus Cuff lock sets: yellow is single pawl, blue is two pawl and red is training. Single pawl cuffs are the standard duty restraint and open with a standard handcuff key. Two pawl cuffs are high security, with a stainless steel plate between the pawls, and need the special key that comes with them.
That included key also opens standard police handcuffs. Plus Cuffs double lock without a key: press the color-indicated bar with a fingertip.
-
Are ASP flashlights waterproof?
No. ASP flashlights are O-ring sealed for a high level of water and weather resistance, but ASP says they are not waterproof or made to be submerged. Dual Fuel models run on the included rechargeable lithium-ion cell or on CR123A batteries as a backup; for example, one 18650 swaps for two CR123A cells.
If a light will not turn on, ASP says it is usually the batteries: check that they are charged, installed positive end toward the lens, and that the cap is fully tightened.
-
How strong is ASP pepper spray, and when should I replace it?
ASP lists its Defender LE and Metro Defender formula at 1.4% major capsaicinoids, and the Sport Defender insert at 1.33%. ASP recommends replacing a Heat insert or canister once a year, and always after any use, since you cannot tell how much is left.
Store Defenders between 32°F and 120°F; a hot car can make the insert leak and a cold one can cut the range. Inert Test inserts and LE trainers let you practice.
-
What is the ASP warranty?
ASP warrants its products against defects in original workmanship and materials, and that warranty covers most ASP products for life. ASP repairs or replaces a defective product at its discretion. Sentry Batons carry a 1-year warranty, and expired or used Defender inserts and depleted batteries are not covered.
The warranty does not cover misuse, improper use, cosmetic damage or normal wear. Product-specific terms are on the card in the package. For a warranty claim on an ASP item you bought from us, send us a message and we will help.
